John Nettleship

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Nettleship on May 29, 2026, at the Cowansville CHSLD, following a long illness.

John leaves behind his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Catherine (Cathy) Cosman; his sons, Paul and Ben; his cherished grandson, Noah; his brother, Peter; and his nephew, Ray. He will also be missed by extended family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

John was predeceased by his parents, Raymond Nettleship and Kathleen Robertson.

Born in Montreal on October 27, 1943, John grew up in Montreal West. He attended Loyola University and later owned and operated Montreal West Hardware, where he became a familiar face in the community.

John married Cathy in Vermont in 1971. He devoted his life to his family and was a steadfast supporter of her dream of becoming a physician, regularly travelling across the country while she attended medical school at the University of Calgary. Together, they built a life in Cowansville and later Knowlton, where they raised their family and where Cathy practised medicine in a community she deeply loved.

Family was always at the centre of John's life. He was never afraid to speak his mind and was known for being direct, honest, and unapologetic in his opinions. Those who knew him best understood that beneath that blunt exterior was a deeply kind, caring, and generous man. He showed his love through his actions, always ready to help, offer advice, or lend a hand when it was needed. He made his family feel safe, loved, and supported, and they knew they could always count on him.

For many years, John volunteered at the elementary and high schools attended by his sons, generously giving his time to help students, staff, and families.

Over the years, John enjoyed many interests and hobbies. He was an avid photographer who carefully documented family life and special moments as his children grew up, leaving behind a collection of memories that his family will treasure. He loved boating on Lake Champlain, where he spent countless hours cruising, water skiing, and sharing time with family and friends. He enjoyed spending time at the cottage and was known for his ability to build, repair, or fix almost anything. He also enjoyed gardening, spoiling his cats and dogs, crossword puzzles, and sport shooting with friends.

To his family, John was home. He was a source of strength, comfort, and unwavering support, not only to those closest to him but to many others as well. Even during his illness, he remained selfless, rarely complaining and always putting the well-being of Cathy and his family first.

John will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Friends and loved ones are invited to a Celebration of Life to honour John's memory from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on June 28th at the:
